Newspaper boxes along Michigan Avenue moved for Obama rally

To all:

Due to security concerns the city would like to remove all news paper boxes from along Michigan avenue on Tuesday November 4th.  The exact boundaries are Roosevelt to Wacker going from the Lake to 100ft west of Michigan.  This will just be for the one day.  The city will collect the boxes and replace them the following day.    We will make note of the locations of the boxes and replace them as they stand today.  If you have lists of locations you would like to forward to me to make sure placement is consistant please feel free to do so.   I apologize for the late notice and I understand that you will most likely have questions and concerns.   Please be assured we are only doing this for reasons of security and do not wish for it to have an affect on standard day to day operations after Tuesday.

I want a rack in my neighborhood, on my corner, etc. Can I?

The multiple newspaper racks are only available in certain well-defined areas of downtown, governed by a Federal Court injunction and the resulting legal settlement. Thus, expanding the program to areas not defined in the legal settlement is somewhat unlikely, unless the city, the newspapers and the vendor (JC Decaux) are able to reach an agreement on a case-by-case basis to modify the multiple newsrack zone.

If you’d like to have a corner, or a street, considered for the program, please email brian@newcity.com. And be patient: it’s a long and complicated process.

Information for monthly or less frequent publications using the multiracks

In order to keep the multiracks stocked with publications and prevent them from becoming garbage receptacles, the idea has been proposed to have less-frequent publications share slots within the multiracks, rather than have them sit empty most of the month. Another option, of course, would be to restock your publication at least weekly over the course of the month.

Please post contact information on your news boxes

The city has requested that all publications with news boxes on the public way post contact information on each box. This will aid the city and others in contacting the publication in case of emergency, or when the box needs to be moved for any reason.

Where can I find the City of Chicago ordinance as it relates to newsracks?
